From seafood caught in the surrounding azure waters to tropical fruits nurtured in its volcanic soil, Madeira offers a cornucopia of flavors that promise to tantalize your taste buds.
What to eat in Madeira?
Bife de Atum (Tuna Steak): is a dish that pays homage to Madeira's rich maritime heritage. High-quality tuna steaks are marinated and then grilled or pan-seared to perfection. The marinade often contains a mix of local spices, olive oil and more...
Filete de Espada is another seafood delicacy from Madeira. The swordfish is often served grilled or fried and is usually accompanied by a rich sauce made of ingredients like garlic, olive oil, and local herbs.
Pudim de Maracujá is a dessert that captures the tropical essence of Madeira. This creamy, rich pudding is flavored with fresh passion fruit pulp and often garnished with a coulis made from the same fruit.

Another curious aspect of Madeira is the "Monte Toboggan Run."
Originally a fast means of transportation down to Funchal for residents of Monte in the 1850s, these large wicker sleds, steered by two men called "Carreiros" wearing straw hats and white uniforms, now serve as an attraction for tourists.
Passengers glide down steep, winding roads over a distance of about 2 kilometers on these sleds, using only the carreiros' rubber-soled boots as brakes. It's a thrilling and unique way to descend the hill and experience a bit of Madeira's history!

One curious fact about Madeira is its "Levadas," a network of mini-canals that crisscross the island.
Initially built in the 16th century to irrigate the agricultural areas, these Levadas now serve a dual purpose as walking paths for tourists and hikers. They stretch for an impressive 2,170 kilometers (about 1,350 miles) and offer a unique way to explore the island's diverse landscapes, from lush forests to dramatic cliffs.
Hiking along these Levadas is a popular activity and a unique experience that you won't find anywhere else.
